What does it mean when a team is +20 or -20 on a spread for sports betting?

What does it mean when a team is +20 or -20 on a spread for sports betting? I want to bet on this game but don’t fully know it. Does the +20 team have to win by 20 or more points for me to win if I choose them? If I choose the -20 team does that mean if the team loses by less then 20 I win? What does it all mean?
